Mercy Family Birthplace nursing is a labor of love

With approximately 93 years of collective nursing experience and 23 children of their own, it’s no wonder the nurses and aides in the Mercy FamilyBirthplace Birthplace are so good at what they do. And it’s easy to understand why they are held in such high esteem by their patients.

“The OB staff at Mercy had treated my family and friends so well in the past, I knew Mercy was the right choice for my delivery,” said Carrie Agosto, first-time mom whose baby boy, Drew, was born at Mercy last November.

“The nurses made me very comfortable and at ease through the process - as much as possible, anyway. We couldn’t have asked for better, more attentive nursing care.”

Practice makes perfect. Last year, the Mercy Family Birthplace delivered 357 babies. With the recent addition of a second obstetrician to the Mercy Physician Group, the hospital and staff are well-positioned to set new delivery records in 2006.  But, according to Mardie Bell, R.N., no matter how many times you’ve done it - how many times you’ve witnessed the “miracle of birth” - as an OB nurse, you never tire of the experience.

Mardie has served as Mercy's OB Coordinator for the past eight years and also directs Mercy's Maternal & Infant Clinic, which provides low-cost prenatal care, delivery and post-partum care to low-income mothers.

"I still enjoy what I do every day," Mardie said. "It's a miracle every time a baby is born.

"It's very rewarding to deliver healthy babies, educate new moms and send home happy families."
