Mercy Hospital and Independence
Community College have announced plans for the 2010 Spirit of Women
“Day of Dance for Health” on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 12
noon at the Independence Civic Center. Day of Dance, which will be
celebrated simultaneously in more than 65 other U.S. cities, is an
event designed to inspire women and their families toward better
overall health by promoting the benefits of dance and movement.
Proving that exercise can be both fun
and beneficial to the heart, the event combines the fun of dancing
to different forms of music with health screenings and consumer
education on heart disease and other health issues.
Day of Dance will include blood
screenings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Blood tests available will include
a wellness profile, including cholesterol screening (fasting test),
lipid profile and complete blood count. Also offered will be a
thyroid function test, CA-125 ovarian cancer screening and prostate
cancer screening for men. The event also will include kids’
activities, service and vendor exhibits and continuous movement and
dance demonstrations designed to be interactive with event goers of
all ages. A variety of door prizes also will be drawn throughout the
event.
Following the morning’s activities,
Day of Dance will be capped off in style with the third annual
“Dancing with the Indy Stars” competition, featuring local couples
performing choreographed numbers for seated judges. The evening
event also will be conducted at the Civic Center and will include a
dessert and champagne reception and other entertainment. The
competition will be designed much like the popular “Dancing with the
Stars” television show, with professional lights and sound, and
awards will be presented based on the judges’ scoring. Guests also
will have the opportunity to vote for a “People’s Choice” winner,
and a DJ will be on hand for open dancing after the competition.
The competition is co-sponsored by
the Mercy Hospital Foundation and Independence Community College
Foundation as a fundraiser for special projects. Proceeds will
benefit the expansion of the Mercy Hospital Cancer Center and the
ICC scholarship program. Tickets for the dance competition are $20
per person and the event capacity will be limited to 200 guests.
RSVP’s are requested by Feb. 19.
