Mercy Hospital adds service directors

Mary Schmidt and Rick Coffman have recently joined the staff at Mercy Hospital. Schmidt has been named the new director of Laboratory services, while Coffman is taking over as director of the Surgery department.

Schmidt recently relocated to Independence from El Dorado, where she worked as the lab director at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

She is a 1997 graduate of Wichita State University where she received her Bachelor’s in Medical Technology degree and Master’s in Healthcare Administration. Schmidt also draws from her past experience as chair of Health professions advisory board and chair of Medical Lab Technician program advisory board with Wichita Area Technical College. She has also served as a board chair of the Bluestem Chapter for the American Red Cross and Kansas director of the Southwest Association of Microbiology.

Schmidt resides in Independence with her husband, Chuck, and her two daughters, Christine and Alex.

Coffman comes to Independence from Ottawa, where he recently served as surgical services director at Ransom Memorial Hospital.

He graduated from Mid America Nazarene University in Olathe in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and later received a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Keller Graduate School of Management in Kansas City. He is a Member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, licensed by the Kansas State Board of Nursing and is a past non-commissioned officer for the Hospital Corps, U.S. Navy.

Coffman and his wife, Malana, have two daughters, ages 8 and 5.
