Elizabeth Goad, office assistant in
the Facilities Maintenance department at Mercy Hospital, was
recently recognized for completion of the “School at Work” program
offered through the Sisters of Mercy Health System.
School at Work (SAW) is a program
geared toward entry level co-workers to provide additional education
as a springboard to career advancement within Mercy. The program
requires a preliminary admissions interview and entrance exam,
followed by weekly at-work class time and homework assignments
covering 36 lessons in two courses: “Introduction to Healthcare” and
“Becoming a Healthcare Professional” and must be completed within a
one-year window. The SAW program has been incorporated in more than
276 hospitals in 36 different states across the nation.
Goad has been employed at Mercy since
2003. Having completed the SAW program, she is now enrolled at
Independence Community College as a full-time student to finish
prerequisite classes in preparation for entering the two-year
radiology program at Labette Community College. After completing the
radiology program, she plans to pursue certification as an
ultrasound technologist.
Kathy Newkirk, senior consultant for
Mercy Learning Resources, served as Goad’s coach in the SAW program.
“Elizabeth is a wonderful person and
will go far in life and in the Mercy system,” Newkirk said.
Goad and her husband, Ryan, reside in
Independence with their daughter, Kaylea, 4.
