Spirit Event to Replicate "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader"

Mercy Health Center announces the third Spirit of Women event in 2008 for area women coming up Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m.. Once again, organizers are challenging women to become knowledgeable about their health through this health-u-tainment event called “Get Stronger, Get Smarter” or “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader”.

At this free event at the Liberty Theatre, replicating the popular television game show, local healthcare professionals will match wits with local fifth grade students from Eugene Ware Elementary School and Winfield Scott Elementary School. Health Topics that the contestants will select from include stroke; osteoporosis/balance/strength; and increasing your brain power. Other categories of questions will come from the fifth grade curriculum.

Phil Hammons, owner of Hammons Realty Co., will serve as master of ceremonies for the game show.

“This promises to be a fun evening of learning and laughing,” said Leah Lewis, Mercy Health Center director of education. “After all, aren’t we all a little curious about who will get the answers right or wrong?”

Health care professionals who will compete as contestants for the most Monopoly dollars include: Dr. Wan-Lin Horng, general surgeon, Dr. John Fox, internal medicine, Dr. Randy Nichols, family practice, Pat Callanan, vice president of patient care services, and Eric Ammons, vice president of human resources at Mercy.

Students offering assistance from the fifth grade at Eugene Ware will be Tim Higgins, son of Gary and Sandy Higgins; Kelsey Stanley, daughter of Brad and Tammy Stanley; Kelly Stone, daughter of Linda Stone. From Winfield Scott, students include Jonathon Carpenter, son of Jon and Kim Carpenter, McKaleigh Short, daughter of Tony and Wendy Short, Rebecca Page, daughter of Tracy and Deborah Page, and Kerian Johnson, daughter of Barbie Johnson. The alternates are Brayton Skaggs, from Eugene Ware, son of Rusty and Tammy Skaggs, and Jonathon Carpenter, from Winfield Scott, son of Jon and Kim Carpenter.

Between contestants, organizers have planned a t-shirt launch of Spirit t-shirts into the audience using a giant sling shot.

While the event is free, tickets are required. Ticket outlets include: Mercy Health Center Registration, Mercy Medical Plaza Registration 902 S. Horton, and the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce. Advance tickets will be available Monday, March 31, for She-Power members who show their membership key tag at one of the ticket outlets. Tickets will be available to the general public beginning Thursday, April 3.

Children over the age of six are welcome to attend this event but must be accompanied by an adult.

As part of the evening, guests will have the opportunity to complete a health risk assessment related to osteoporosis. The completed assessments will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a lavish spa package including massage, pedicure, manicure, hair cut and styling provided by Health for Life and Diamonds in the Market Place.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show to begin at 7 p.m. Guests will be able to enjoy a snack box prior to the show. A membership table will also be set up for those individuals who would like to join the She-Power membership program and receive discounts at over 50 area retailers.
