Mercy Health Center Welcomes Speech Language Pathologist

The Mercy Health Center Rehabilitation staff is pleased to announce Kimberly Biller, Speech and Language Pathologist, has joined the Rehabilitation department. Biller’s responsibilities began January 4, 2010.

Speech and Language Pathologists assist patients with a variety of speech and swallowing disorders as a result of stroke, neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, cancer or head trauma. Biller will also assist special needs students with articulation and language disorders.

"I am excited to have Kimberly join our Mercy team,” said Eric Baldonado, Director of Rehabilitation Services. “She will make a great addition to an already strong rehabilitation program. Our co-workers were truly impressed with Kimberly's intelligence and confidence. We are pleased that Kimberly chose Mercy and our team to begin her career and hope that she is a part our growing department for years to come."

Biller, originally from Des Moines, IA., received a graduate degree in Communication Disorders from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO and an undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA.

“I choose to work at Mercy for several reasons,” Biller explained.

“First, I am impressed with how well the rehab department is equipped. For a hospital of this size to have much of the latest technology, such as the modified barium swallow and the “Vital Stim” equipment is exciting. Secondly, everyone I have met is so friendly and welcoming. People seem excited to have me here and I look forward to learning the people of the community and helping meet their needs. Lastly, Fort Scott is a town with character and its own identity.”

While in graduate school, Biller worked at a hospital in the Kansas City area where she assisted adult patients with traumatic brain injury rehab, swallowing disorders, cognitive and language disorders. She also worked at a public elementary school to help special needs students between the ages of two to 14 years with articulation and language disorders.

“The Speech and Language Pathology field interests me because it is a helping profession,” Biller commented. “I like to meet new people and help with their needs. This profession allows me to use my education and training in a way to help improve another person’s life.”

Biller will see patients at Mercy Health Center in the Mercy RehabCentre by appointment. A Physician referral is necessary. To contact Biller regarding Speech and Language therapy, call Mercy RehabCentre at 620-223-7003.
