FORT SCOTT - Mercy Home Care is
celebrating its 35th anniversary of service to the Fort Scott area.
The home care service was established by Mercy in November 1974 and
today serves approximately 900 annually, providing in-home nursing
care, therapy services and medication administration, among other
services.
To commemorate the anniversary in the
community, the organization engaged kindergarten, first- and
second-grade students of Winfield Scott and Eugene Ware schools in
education programs and a drawing contest. Home care nurses Brenda
Bailey and Wanda Ogle met with the children to provide education on
prevention of spreading germs and to teach the children about how
nurses help people when they go into a patient’s home. The students
were then asked to draw a picture of what they believe homecare
nurses do, and all of the pictures were judged to determine which
depicted the best representation of Mercy Home Care service.
“It’s amazing how creative all of the
pictures were,” said Becky Davied, Mercy Home Care director. “I am
very impressed with the time and thought that went into each
picture, and narrowing it down to first, second and third place was
difficult.”
First place in the contest was
awarded to Angel Taylor, first grader from Eugene Ware. Second place
went to Jenny Heckman, kindergartener of Winfield Scott; and the
third-place winner was Ashtyn Dowell, second grader at Eugene Ware.
“Each student did an exceptional job
of representing what we do through their art,” Davied said. “Our
home care staff truly enjoyed looking at every entry, and they are
now posted on the walls by the cafeteria at Mercy Health Center for
visitors to enjoy.”
Gifts for the contest participants
were provided by Mercy Nutritional Services, Woods Super Market and
Walmart.
